TIP: Dropshot Techniques

1. 'Shaking' The shaking technique performs optimally with bottom debris like weed, small branches, snags etc. Adjust the difference between the dropshot lead and the lure so that it is presented just above the debris. Cast the set-up on the desired spot and put the line under tension, move the rod with little twitches without moving the lead too much. When you have no result you retrieve a little bit and repeat the technique. Because the dropshot shads float it will remain free from dirt. When the fish can be found in higher water surfaces you can use the identical technique yet with a larger distance between the dropshot lead and the shad. Pencil shaped leads are best to use with this technique.

2. 'Swimming' With this technique the dropshot shad can be fished as a standard lure. The dropshot lead can remain above the bottom by lifting the rod higher and adjusting the retrieving speed. This technique is perfectly suitable in deeper waters (2 to 3m+) with a fairly flat bottom.

3. 'Freezing' Many anglers think that softbait is only attractive when it can be fished actively. This is not always true; with dropshot fishing it can be very successful to keep the bait in the water without giving it action with the rod or reel. The flow of the water already gives the shad a vibrating action that is often sufficient to tempt the fish to a take. Tip: freeze the softbait on a known hotspot like a slope of deep bowl, the result will be surprising!

4. 'Dragging' The perfect technique to combine with the techniques 'shaking' and 'freezing'. With dragging, the dropshot lead is dragged over the bottom and the line may not become slack to ensure no bites are missed. Eventually, dragging can be combined with giving small ticks, which twitches the softbait. This technique is ideal to locate the fish!

5. 'Dropping' As the name implicates, the shad is moved upwards and dropped back until the dropshot lead touches the bottom again. This technique can be repeated during the whole period of retrieving, but also only on a certain hotspot! Vary the depths of dropping, the fish will often take the bait when it drops.
